Activities Based on "Good Neighbors in Kisimu": Discussions

For grades 4 and up:
Read the parable of the Good Samaritan ( Luke 10:30-37) with students. Have them read the article and name the "Good Samaritans" in the article.  There is more than one!

Discuss the historical background about Samaritans in Jesus' time:

  • there was tension between the Jewish people and the Samaritan people
  • they rarely interacted with each other
  • for a Jewish person to call another Jew a "Samaritan" was an insult.

Then talk about the the tribal tension mentioned in the article and why it was happening.

Much of the scripture story takes place on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho. It was an especially dangerous place. Talk about the chances the story characters would be taking to stop and help the injured man, then look at the article and see if caring for their neighbors put some citizens of Kisumu in danger.

For grades 7 and up:
Have students (grades 5 and up) research peacemaking efforts in Kenya.
